And on to all of the delicious appetizers that I enjoyed in Brazil. Pizzas with rump steak, fresh focaccia brought to the dinner table on an elaborate stand, chicken hearts, fresh hearts of palm galore. Everything was eccentric and atypical and delectable and ridiculously flavorful. So here, for you, is a journey through my appetizers.
Fresh focaccia bread that comes to the dinner table on a stand!
Antipasti platter with grilled zucchini, roasted tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, salami, tuna
Fresh hearts of palm, olive oil, watercress
Baked goat cheese with olive oil and thyme, micro greens salad. I've heard of baked brie, but not baked goat cheese! It was even better, with a nice golden crust of fresh herbs
A friend of my mother's knew the chefs, so I went into the kitchen to prepare a meal!
More fresh hearts of palm. This is a staple in Brazilian restaurants. I loved it; it reminded me of artichokes
This was a seafood appetizer. Very similar to a crab cake, served in a seashell
It was just okay:)
Brazilian "pastels," which were little envelopes of pastry dough filled with meat or cheese. There were brought to the dinner table at every restaurant that we went to, like bread in the U.S. but even better! Very addictive
Deep-fried chicken hearts. They were so flavorful and tasted like roasted mushrooms. A little chewy but made for a great appetizer
Sauteed steak, peppers and onions, served as an app with bread and mayonnaise. It was the bomb! Just like steak fajitas, but you eat it with sliced baguette
Salmon Tataki rolls at the swanky Unique Hotel's rooftop bar. Felt like Miami
Pizza with sliced rump steak and chopped spinach. Perfect appetizer that I wasn't willing to share. We ordered two
Another chef that I met. He let me make my own salad!
For my Kitchenese-ies: the kitchen looked just like it does in American kitchens! Some things are universal, and Kitchenese is one of them....
My salad creation: hearts of palm (of course, I was converted!), parmesan, olives, tomatoes, capers, housemade vinaigrette
Bruschetta toasts with Brie and housemade apricot jam
